nature nurtures itself

If we accept that something shitty is a part of human nature, and we also accept that we are human (and therefore naturally susceptible to that shitty something sometimes ourselves), it seems to me that the next step is to admit that whatever stories we are using to convince ourselves that something shitty is inevitable? those stories also contain clues about how we might do things better, and warnings about traps we might succumb to out of fear, and advice about who we should listen to, in order to stop being shitty as soon as possible, and with a minimum of long-term damage.

“it’s just human nature!” does not apply to our destructive potential alone;
it also applies to our capacity to learn, and heal.

this strikes me as a very important thing to remember.

dear congressman ryan,

our social safety net is not in danger of becoming a hammock. it is attempting to serve as a cocoon. we are a nation of too many caterpillars, and too few butterflies. we do not need to worry about lulling anyone into complacency; we need to allow the next generation to sleep securely, so that their wings have a chance to grow.
